Threesome? No thanks

What is a smart fortwo (yes the lower case spelling is intentional)? Its one of the world’s smallest, most fuel efficient cars.

The Smart was jointly developed by watchmaker Swatch and car maker Mercedes-Benz. Having started in Europe in 1998, the Mercedes micro car division, smart is now available worldwide.

The smart fortwo is available in both a coupe from $19,990 and the cabrio version from $22,990, with a new model due here early 2008. Despite its micro size, the smart coupe and cabrio deliver Mercedes-like standard safety features, starting with ESP (electronic stability program), Brake Assist and ABS.

The transmission is of sequential semi-manual design and has six speeds. You can either opt for a clutchless manual routine, or use the Smart in pure automatic mode.

The coupe and cabrio are powered by a 45kW turbo-charged three-cylinder engine, which on a combine cycle sniffs just 4.7L/100km.

In the recent 2007 World Solar Challenge, the little fortwo made the long trip from Darwin to Adelaide, covering 3,568 km over seven days with a fuel consumption rate of only 4.61L/100km. Driven by three non-professional drivers, the little two-seater cruised along the Northern Territory’s Stuart Highway at speeds reaching 130km/h. The air-conditioning was running the entire time.

Not built for tackling mountain roads at high speeds, the fortwo is at home zipping around busy urban streets. The tiny 698cc engine can keep up with traffic but only just – it feels a little top heavy in the corners. Both cars measure only 1.8m, which makes parking a breeze.

People just seem to love it, but the first question they pose usually concerns whether or not you feel vulnerable in traffic in the smart. The answer is no. Since the cockpit is as big or bigger than most small sedans, you feel perfectly safe. The car is built around a rugged crash-worthy structure and there are airbags for both occupants. The lightweight smart uses a disc front/drum rear brake setup with ABS system.

This tiny smart fortwo has found an enthusiastic niche of trend setters that are willing to spend a little more for something truly unique, including many businesses, which use it as a promotional vehicle. Personally I love the car, it is a lot of fun to drive, is environmentally conscious and easy to park. The brand may be quirky to some but it will also be ideal to those who appreciate a mix of fuel efficiency, low emissions, and upscale luxury appointments.
