Long live the circus

Rugged up against the winter chill, several tramloads of us made our way from Swanston Street along the Yarra to the big tent on Birrang Marr for Circus Oz's 30th anniversary season.

An audience at Circus Oz is like a cross between a 'save the whales' protest and an afternoon at the footy - educated professionals and their two point three, hyperactive offspring. In the mix are a scattering of cultured same-sex families, almost indistinguishable from their heterosexual counterparts.

On arrival at the big top, and somewhat influenced by the squeals of excitement from the children, I made a beeline for the donut stand. Greeting me was a jolly Scotswoman who sold me on the three donut pack, then, noticing my shoulder bag, promptly announced over the loudspeaker that "we have a meterosexual in the foyer".

I've been called many things over the years, but never the dreaded "M" word. I took it on the chin in the good spirit in which it was offered.

From then on it was a fabulous night at the circus, complete with gasp-worthy balancing/tumbling routines and the larrikin (dare I say, daggy) style so closely associated with this mad troupe of entertainers.

May Circus Oz prosper for at least another 30 years.
