In 1983, Cyndi Lauper made a grand entrance onto the music scene with her debut album She's So Unusual, bringing with her all the color and flair of a Mardi Gras float.
25 years later the color and flair is still very much there, as Ms Lauper proved when she graced the stage at this year's Mardi Gras Party. Alongside signature tune Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Lauper treated her devoted audience to a taste of her new album in the form of Same Ol' Story. For those that enjoyed the tease, you won't be disappointed.
Inspired in part by her observations of the outside world, everyday life and people, Lauper set out to dress the lyrical content of her 12th studio album with the vibrant threads of dance music. In the design room are some of today's hottest dance producers and mixers, including Basement Jaxx, Rich Morel, Kleerup, Axwell, Scumfrog, Dragonette, and Digital Dog.
Lauper sings 'Still got my feet on tie to the beat', and she means it. From the dub beat of High and Mighty, through the synth-driven Into the Nightlife and onto the disco club joy of Same Ol' Story, Lauper bridges the gap between disco, electro-funk and dance on this album and ties it all together with her unique and instantly recognisable vocal. While the album's delivery is very current, there are elements, like closer Rain On Me, that echo past Cyndi hits.Lauper recently embarked on her True Colors 2008 Tour, continuing her fight for equality for the gay, lesbian and transgender community. The tour, hosted by Carson Kressley, plays host to a plethora of guest artists such as The Indigo Girls, Joan Armatrading, The B52s, Regina Spektor, Rosie O'Donnell, Kat DeLuna and Deborah Cox. It joins forces with America's Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG and the newly-formed True Colors Fund to raise awareness of GLBT issues, to educate people and raise funds for related community organizations.
After listening to Bring Ya To The Brink, you can only hope that Cyndi Lauper returns to Oz very soon.
