The Showbags have got a lot to answer for. The drag troupe that have not only launched themselves on the international comedy circuit have also been a springboard for a busload of drag queens.
Two such identities are Jackie Stevens and Jillette Jones. These all-dancing, all lip-syncing drag gals are currently fronting their own gig, The Jack and Jill Show at Templebar Precinct in Collingwood.
A variation on the theatre restaurant formula, Jack and Jill at Templebar offers a dinner and show deal that includes a three-course meal complemented by as many drag shows. There’s a strong retro theme pulling the entertainment together (thanks to the music selection of DJ Claire with the Hair) and the whole shebang culminates in a grand tribute to 1960s divas of the bouffant hair variety. Think Di Ross and Dusty Springfield and you’re in the right trailer park.
Wisecracking Jillette Jones (Jill) takes on hosting duties – warming up the crowd and introducing the numbers, while her silent partner in crime, Jackie Stevens keeps the mime torch burning. It’s a solid double bill framing well-rehearsed, fully choreographed numbers of the jaw quivering variety. The shows are decked out in a rack of camp costumes that, while reminiscent of the proverbial Spotlight fire sale, more than adequately set the mood of the evening. A guest performer would have rounded off the entertainment bill but this is a minor criticism – these hard working drag entrepreneurs more than carry the night. Not so surprising, there is strong patronage for this style of night out. The Friday I attended, Templebar was packed to the rafters with at least three large table bookings, one of which was the birthday celebration of showgirl extraordinaire, Michelle Tozer. Dinner and show venues run the risk of being one great compromise. Rarely does the entertainment match the standard of the catering and vice versa. To their credit, The Jack and Jill Show and Templebar have the formula down pat. The atmosphere is exceptional, the food well proportioned and presented, the entertainment light and boppy. The success of drag shows at Templebar (their Wednesday Spag and Drag night is legendary) is further evidence of the popularity of Smith Street as lesbian and gay entertainment hub.
