Hot little hatch

Peugeot has a reputation for producing ‘hot-hatches’. The 205GTi screamed through the 1980s and ‘90s, then came the 206GTi. Now the 207GTi has been launched.

The latest version of the 207 will not disappoint. It is fast as well as quick – mean and relatively clean, all in one package.

The new GTi has a top speed of 220kmh/r but it’s the getting there (where legal) that’s the fun. It is powered by a 1.6L, turbo-charged, petrol engine that produces just over 240Nm of torque which peaks at just 1600rpm. This allows the GTi to reach 100kmh/r from a standing start in just 7.1seconds. The grin starts almost instantaneously.

An automatic transmission would reduce the engine’s performance, so Peugeot has sensibly employed a five-speed manual box. The lower gears are said to make for ‘more dynamic changes’ through tight bends and corners.

As with all versions of the 207, the ‘wheel-in-every-corner’ design means it is inherently stable. With stiffened suspension the roadholding is impressive and almost worthy of a more expensive, heavier car. It’s hard to believe it’s a front-wheel-drive car, with torque steer on acceleration non-existent.

Safety is of paramount importance and this pocket rocket has a bucket load of acronyms. With all that torque on hand, the usual ABS with EBD, or EBDF as Peugeot calls it, is not quite enough without the back-up of other systems.

The 207GTi stops straight and quick enough but just to make sure, there’s also Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), traction control (ASR) and stability control CDS, which detects under or over-steer. However, there is a new system called Steering Stability Program (SSP).

Together with the enhanced body structure, these safety systems have gained the 207GTi five stars for occupant protection, four stars for child protection and three stars for pedestrian protection in the EuroNCAP safety tests.

The $33,490 price tag is a reasonable one for this bundle of fun. Included is the extra sporty looks in the form of a GTi rear spoiler, twin front spoilers, twin sports exhaust and 17-inch alloys.

The standard leather upholstery adds an air of sporty comfort to the interior. The front, bucket-style seats are suitably hip-hugging and supportive when driving in a manner that it is designed for. Passengers agile enough to get in to the back seats will not want to travel too far as there is minimal leg room.

The 207 GTi is bound to attract a new generation of racers, if the insurance rating doesn’t put them off. The GTi has grown up and has even more safety features and technology then ever before, but it’s still a whole lot of guaranteed fun.
